Biography

Christy Till is a geologist and assistant professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University whose research integrates a variety of petrologic, geochemical, and geochronologic techniques to examine the mechanisms and timescales of magma genesis as relate to the evolution of planetary interiors and volcanic hazards.

She also served as vice chair of the Council of the American Geophysical Union (2012-2014), the largest professional organization of earth and space scientists, and has broad interests in improving communication between scientists and policy makers, educators and the general public.

Education

  • Ph.D. Geology/Geochemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 2011
  • M.S. Geological Sciences, Univ. California, Santa Barbara 2005
  • B.S. Geological Sciences, Univ. California, Santa Barbara 2004

Research Interests

Christy Till is an igneous petrologist interested in the physical and chemical evolution of planetary interiors. Specifically her research interests are in the chemistry, conditions, and timescales of magma formation as pertain to the differentiation of Earth and other planets, as well as volcanic hazards. To investigate these topics she integrates a variety of techniques including fieldwork, high pressure and temperature piston-cylinder and multi-anvil experiments, elemental and isotopic geochemistry and geochronology (via electron probe, SIMS/SHRIMP, LA-ICPMS and NanoSIMS) and quantitative models.
