William Stefanov is Chief Scientist for the Science Applications, Research and Development (SARD) Deparment supporting the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate at NASA Johnson Space Center. He works with the Engineering and Science Contract Group (ESCG) and NASA on strategic planning and roadmap development for future science activities, future exploration and technology development, and establishment of new collaborations both within NASA and with external agencies, universities, NGOs, etc.
In association with the International Space Station (ISS) Program Science Office, he works with the international partners and instrument science/operation teams to coordinate collection, distribution, and analysis of remotely sensed data from the ISS in response to catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and flooding. He also trains International Space Station astronauts in various Earth Science topics, and conducts research on land surface processes using remotely sensed data. His research interests include the use of visible through microwave remote sensing techniques to investigate urban and peri-urban geology/geohazards, climatology, and ecology.
