About Ed Nissen

Ed's research addresses the active tectonics of continental earthquake belts, drawing on observations from remote sensing, seismology and geomorphology. He studies both individual earthquakes, primarily with satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) and seismic body-waveform modeling, as well as longer term fault movements occurring over many earthquake cycles, using Quaternary dating techniques to pin down the rates of deformation. For his current fellowship, he is exploring how LiDAR topography can be used to map earthquake surface deformation, as well as investigating other ways of generating very high-resolution topographic datasets. Geographical areas of focus include the Middle East, Central Asia and Southern California.
