INSTRUCTIONS for GRADUATE ADMISSIONS APPLICATIONS

Standard applications are for admission starting in the Fall Semester. We also accept applications for admission starting in the Spring Semester under special circumstances.

Applications for Fall are due by January 5th of the same year.

Applications for Spring are due by October 1st of the previous year.

With the EXCEPTION of your Recommendation Forms which may be submitted via email, ALL THE APPLICATION MATERIAL SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE ADMISSIONS OFFICE and will be forwarded to the School of Earth and Space Exploration. All materials must be RECEIVED by the application deadline.

Step 1:

Review School of Earth and Space Exploration requirements and the requirements for ASU Graduate Admissions. Make sure you have taken all required tests (GRE, TOEFL, etc).

Step 2:

Complete the Online Application (application fee required): http://www.asu.edu/graduate/admissions

Be sure to record your Application ID Number.

Step 3:

Prepare the supplementary material for an application to the School of Earth and Space Exploration:

  • Make sure you have the free Adobe Reader version 8 or newer. Version 7 will not work with the following form.
  • Save this Recommendation Form to your computer using a unique name, for example, your_name_asu_rec.pdf. How to save it depends on what browser you are using. You may be able to right-click on the link and choose "Save". Or, if the document opens within your browser, look in your menus for an option like File, Save.
  • Fill out Section 1 of the form you saved on your computer.
  • Forward your form, with your Section 1 answers, to three (3) referees, requesting that they either email completed forms to SESE_admit@asu.edu or mail them to the Graduate Admissions Office (address below) for receipt by the application deadline. (Please advise your referees that they will need Acrobat Reader 8 or newer to save and email the pdf form correctly, otherwise the form can be printed and mailed or printed, scanned and emailed).
  • A personal letter of interest (no more than 2 pages) describing your interests and motivations for graduate study.

Step 4:

Arrange to have transcripts and official test scores sent to the Graduate Admissions Office.

Graduate application checklist:

For your application packet to be considered complete, you will need to submit the following items:

    • Arizona State University Graduate Study Application with application fee*.
    • One complete official transcript from every college you have attended.
    • Official GRE test scores (Physics GRE for Astrophysics degree).
    • Three (3) Recommendation Forms (email to SESE_admit@asu.edu).
    • Personal Letter of Interest
    • TOEFL Scores - if you are an international student from a country where English is not the native language.
    • Financial Guarantee Form (if you are an international student).
    • USA Visa for non citizens

    *Domestic degree graduate nonrefundable application fee is $65 and international degree graduate nonrefundable application fee is $80. Applications will not be processed until the fee is received. All checks and money orders must include student's full name as it appears on the Graduate Application, Date of Birth, and Application ID number.

ONLY COMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED. Please be sure that ALL your materials are sent promptly. The School of Earth and Space Exploration at ASU is not responsible for materials not received. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission to the program. False statements on this application may lead to disqualification from the program.

SESE Requirements:

    Tests

    • Take required tests - GRE plus Physics GRE for the Astrophysics degree program - and have the official scores sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office in the Graduate College. Test scores must be received directly from the agency administering the test. Photocopies are not acceptable.
    • If English is not your native language, you must provide evidence of English proficiency as indicated by acceptable scores on the TOEFL or IELTS. Please see the Graduate Admission checklist for details.

    Supplemental Application Materials

    • Three (3) Recommendation Forms
    • A personal letter of interest describing your interests and motivations for graduate study.

    Degree and Coursework

    • U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from an international institution that is officially recognized by that country.
    • Equivalent to a "B" average (in the last 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of undergraduate coursework). If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, your application may still be considered although the degree program office may require additional supporting documents.
